BEFORE
Filters collect everything from dirt, plant deposits, swimmer deposits such sweat and dead skin cells. It's gross, but everything you DON'T want in your pool builds up in your filter. Even pools with sanitizer levels in range can support algae and bacteria inside the filter trying to break down the contaminants the filter has collected. Even with regular backwashing these deposits still build up.

AFTER
Cleaning a filter is a complete reset. We completely disassemble, wash all the contaminants from grids or cartridges, pull drain plug or unions and completely empty out the tank. Many times there's a noticeable difference in the sound from the pump as the water flows more freely on a clean filter. Best practice is cleaning a filter quarterly, every three months.

TYPES OF SWIMMING POOL FILTERS

DE FILTER
Finest Filter
Filters the smallest contaminants from a swimming pool down to 2-5 microns.
CARTRIDGE FILTER
Most Popular
Excellent filter that's widely used in residential applications. Filters down to 8-10 microns.
SAND FILTER
Easy to Run
Sand filters can run 24 hours a day, and backwash as many times with no media loss. Filter to 20 microns.
DE FILTERS
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters are considered the finest filters for residential pools. DE are seashells ground into fine powder. When DE spreads around coating a panel, it catches contaminants down to the 2-5 micron range. DE filters perform best when they run between 7-12 hours during the day, and then have hours of down time for the DE to settle in the tank. Backwashing removes some of the DE inside the filter along with some of the contaminants collected, but never can get all out. After a DE filter has been backwashed, some new DE needs to be added back to the filter to restore what was removed. The filter does NOT require a full load because a full charge of DE plus the residual can over crowd the filter case and prevent the normal run and settle process.

DE Filters typically have been grid styles seen below, but also include the Pentair Quad Cartridge style below.

It's important to remember that the DE media does the filtering. The rigid structure inside (grids or Quad cartridges) merely spread out the filtering media over a larger surface area. Grids are cloth; they are wear components like tires on a car. When grids begin to fail pin holes in the cloth allow dirt to slip by. You may notice your pool always looks a little cloudy, or perhaps your pool sweep screen is always getting stopped up. These are early symptoms of filter failure. When a grid tears severly, the filter can empty all the DE as well as contaminants into the pool.

CARTRIDGE FILTERS
Cartridge filters are the most popular filter in residential swimming pool. They are the easiest to adopt on new pool construction. Cartridge filters remove contaminants down to 8-10 microns which makes them an excellent option for residential pools, however, Cartridge filters cannot backwash. This means regular filter cleanings are even more critical for cartridge filters than DE filters.

Cartridge filters come in a standard quad layout for pool size filters, or in single cartridge cases for spa-size filters.

SAND FILTERS
Sand filters are the most popular filters among commercial swimming pools. They can be a good choice for residential pools as well. Sand filters can be backwashed as often as you like. The way you clean a Sand filter completely is by performing a Sand Change. This is a much larger course of work than cleaning a DE or Cartridge filter because it's a very intensive course of work. Sand should be changed every 1-2 years. Delaying will cause worse water quality, and slowly contaminants will sift down through the filter and begin trickling back into the return.

SANITIZER OPTIONS
CHLORINE POOLS
Of course, all traditional chlorine pools are supported in our weekly services.
SALT POOLS
All salt pools are supported in our weekly services, although these tend to run a slightly higher pH and slightly lower alkalinity when compared to traditional chlorine pools.
OZONE & UV
All Ozone and UltraViolet (UV) light systems are supported on our weekly services, but these typically need additional chlorine sanitizer added to supplement. People usually can experience the most comfortable and safest water with Ozone and UV added because these can allow lower chlorine levels as well as superior virus treatment.
LIQUID CHLORINE
There are sanitizer management systems for Liquid Chlorine. Liquid Chlorine is an excellent sanitizer, however the management systems' service intervals should be a consideration if this is a priority for you.
